Inception

Two months ago, I woke up at 2am with smoke pouring out of the air vents in my apartment.  I don’t know what my neighbors were smoking, but it was making me very ill.  I somehow managed to stumble around, get all of the vents closed, turn off the heat, turn on the ceiling fans and open the windows.  Then I grabbed my purse and headed to my car, thinking I might need to go to the ER because I was getting sicker by the minute.

Once I got outside, I began to feel better, so I just sat in my car while my apartment aired out.  Did I mention the temperature outside was about 35F? When I spoke to the property manager about this later, I was told, “Well, it’s their apartment. They can smoke whatever they want to in it.”

I said, “Really?!” And then some other stuff was said, and…

Well, to make a long story short, I don’t live there anymore.

When I was a teenager, my family bought a new-construction home, and there was a carbon-monoxide leak in the heater.  We all almost died, and I was unconscious for a short period of time.  Since then, my Mom and I are extremely sensitive to cigarette smoke (and anything similar).  It goes from an annoying smell to a really painful experience very quickly.

So when this happened, I knew I needed to get out of there.  Fortunately, my lease was almost up, but this meant I had to find another place to live IMMEDIATELY. I found a place that was open in a non-smoking community two miles away, and took what they had available online.  I had visited this place about a year before, but only remembered that the place was new, it had an elevator, the people seemed very nice, and there was no smoking allowed on the property.

Because most of my larger furniture was waaaaay past its prime, I decided not to hire movers, but to donate or dump what I couldn’t move myself, and just get new furniture at the new place.  This meant I did the packing, moving, and unpacking myself, which has been an all-consuming project for several weeks, but I’m in the new place, and I’m starting to see daylight now.

I still have some unpacking to do, curtains to hang, and artwork to display, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my new place.  It’s larger, newer, lighter, brighter, and better in every way.  I’m on the top floor of a four-story building, and have a lovely view.  And the people are great!

In the middle of moving day (which actually took three days), when I was totally overwhelmed and exhausted, my Dad encouraged by reminding me that this move could really be the start of a whole new life.  That’s good advice, and I intend to do just that.

What started out as a near catastrophe, and then a major inconvenience, has turned out to be exactly the change I needed to make.  And I intend to make the most of it.  Wish me luck!  🙂
